Psychiatry Residency

In 2023, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded Cahaba Medical Care a grant to develop an innovative psychiatric training program dedicated to serving rural communities across Alabama.

Through the Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program, we set out to bring high-quality psychiatric care and training to one of the most historically underserved regions of the Southeast. Under the leadership of Dr. John B. Waits and Dr. Lacy Smith, Cahaba Medical Care leveraged its success in developing Rural Family Medicine Residency programs to expand into the field of psychiatry. That same year, Dr. Boone G. Rountree joined Cahaba Medical Care as its first full-time psychiatrist. In 2025, Cahaba Medical Care+UAB Rural Psychiatry Program earned initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), affirming its alignment with the highest standards in psychiatric training.
