Dr. John Waits, MD, CPE, FAAFP - CEO -

Dr. John B. Waits, MD, CPE, FAAFP, is the co-founder and CEO of Cahaba Medical Care, a Community Health Center (Federally Qualified Health Center) established in 2004 in rural Bibb County, Alabama. Since its founding, the organization has grown to serve nearly 47,000 patients across 27 offices throughout central Alabama. Together in 2013, he and Dr. Lacy Smith co-founded Cahaba Family Medicine Residency, where he serves as program director and DIO. He is a practicing, board-certified Family Medicine and Obstetrics physician with a particular interest in healthcare policy and its impact on women and children in maternity and infant care, the rural poor, healthcare access, and the care of the uninsured and underinsured. Dr. Waits attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine Residency at In His IMAGE Family Medicine Residency in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as a surgical family medicine obstetrics fellowship at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

 

Dr. Lacy Smith, MD, FAAFP - COO/CMO -

Dr. Lacy Smith, MD, FAAFP, is a practicing, board-certified Family Medicine physician and co-founder of Cahaba Medical Care, where she serves as the Deputy CEO, Chief Operations Officer, primary grant writer, and Chief Medical Officer. Additionally, she serves as the co-founder and Associate Program Director of Cahaba-UAB Family Medicine Residency. Originally from Montevallo, Alabama, she attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2008 and completed her residency at the Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency, College of Community Health Sciences, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 2011. Dr. Smith has assisted in publishing several national publications and has helped to successfully write numerous federal and state grants supporting either uninsured and low-income patients or primary care training. Additionally, she has led Cahaba in its successful application to become an NCQA Level 3 (highest) Patient Centered Medical Home, as well as an accredited JCAHO Ambulatory Care Center and Patient Centered Medical Home. Under her leadership, Cahaba Medical Care has grown from an 11-employee private practice to a 27-location organization with more than 650 employees and 130+ healthcare providers, all focused on the mission of providing high-quality healthcare to those who can’t afford it. Additionally, during her tenure, Cahaba Medical Care has been nationally recognized by HRSA as a “Health Center Leader” and has advanced to the “gold” level, in the top 10% for quality nationwide.
